Myofascial Release is a hands-on technique where gentle sustained pressure is put onto the Myofascial connective tissue to eliminate pain and restore motion.
Fascia is best describe as being like clingfilm that surrounds all our muscles and organs, offering support and reducing friction during everyday movement. However this fascia can become tight and stiff if we don’t do movement to support it. 'Myofascial release' is a set of techniques that aim to stretch and smooth out fascia so we can restore balance.
Myofascial release can be done with specific myofascial release balls, or simply a tennis ball. Take the ball and roll it under the part of the body that feels tight, or like there is a ‘knot’. You can work into the shoulders, calves, shoulders or anywhere in the body that feels needed. You can also place the ball between your back and a wall, and move up and down.
I love to incorporate these balls into my yin practice for a really juicy release.
