I have discovered some AHHH - MAY - ZING products lately, from sunscreen to natural tinted moisturiser to cruelty-free face wipes.
Vegan and cruelty-free products have come on leaps (bunny pun intended) and bounds in recent years. Companies on the high street, such as Lush, have a huge range of products including make-up, perfumes and haircare, as well as bath & body products.
For a long time I was somewhat oblivious to what I put on my skin, and would pick up products without necessarily knowing what was in them and if they were tested on animals. To be honest, when I was a teenager I just assumed that my foundation and mascara were fine - it didn't strike me that my make-up might be tested on animals. Because, well why would it really? When you grow up viewing animals as friends, it is incomprehensible that they would be used in such a cruel way.
At ten years old I decided to go vegetarian, not realising to the extent that animals are exploited in other areas. It has probably taken me the best of the following 20 years since then to really understand, and I have since shifted to a vegan lifestyle.
We live in a consumer driven age, however we still have the ability to make conscious, mindful purchases. I try to make the most ethical choices when shopping; carrying reusable bags, asking for "no straws", choosing products that aren't wrapped in plastic, looking for cruelty-free make up to replace old products etc.
It is getting much easier to find out if products are tested on animals. I recently went into MECCA (a make-up superstore in Oz) and they have a huge list (literally pages printed out that they showed me!) of vegan and cruelty-free products. They were so helpful in finding me products and it was great to see how a big chain like this has so many brands that are cruelty-free. Obviously in an ideal world ALL of their products would be cruelty-free, but this is a step in the right direction.
Here are some tried & tested products which I love! Let me know if you try any out or you have any other recommendations :)
This tinted moisturiser from PERFECT POTION is one of my favourite purchases lately. It smells fab (like tea tree oil/lavender) and I now wear it every day.
Slightly orange/pink undertone and I normally go for yellow tones, but it looks really good when I have a bit of a tan.
I chose the Honey shade, which is good if you've got tanned skin. Highly rate!
I've never used LUSH haircare before as I had heard mixed reviews. However, I LOVE these two products. I have bleached ombre hair so love a purple shampoo to help keep get rid of brassiness and keep my blonde fresh. Their vegan conditioner smells like absolute heaven too! I am now fully converted to Lush shampoo & conditioner.
I love to use a cleanser to wash my face, but make-up remover wipes are still an essential for me. If I am travelling or on the go, these make it easy for me to remove make-up if I'm not near a sink! However, I have been concerned about the waste from these lately and was DELIGHTED when I found these wipes from JOSIE MARAN while shopping in MECCA. Not only are they cruelty-free and biodegradable but a portion of the sales goes to save polar bears! Win, win!
In terms of a cleansers, I have been using EVOHE lately. It has a creamy consistency and leaves my skin feeling really soft and isn't harsh at all. Takes a few pumps to clean make-up off (and can't use for eye make-up) but I love how my skin feels afterwards and it has lasted me so long (I have had my current one for two months and it is still full).
My skin has been transformed thanks to KM BESPOKE SKINCARE - I got this oil and toner at a market recently where I met Kylie, the owner, and I cannot tell you how much I LOVE this brand. I have been using this oil everyday for over 3 months now and I have noticed that my skin looks smoother, more glow-y and more youthful. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE.
SUN BUM is the nicest smelling (coconut), best vegan sun protection brand I have EVER tried. This spray version goes on so light and doesn't feel oily or make my skin look white. Only issue is I now can't find this product anywhere (I bought while travelling up the East Coast) and their website only ships to the States. Boo! But I will continue to try find it! Anyone know where I can get my mitts on this in Sydney?
...And there you have it! My favourite products at the moment. I met this little bunny (below) recently and it just can't understand why anyone would test products on creatures like him.
