I went to Melbourne last weekend and first on my list of places to hit up was Matcha Mylkbar - an award winning vegan cafe.
I have been following their amazing plant-based creations on Insta for a few years now, at a time when I wasn't even sure if I'd ever make it as far as Australia. Safe to say excitement levels reached 'night before Christmas' heights.
They are famous for their vegan eggs and colourful lattes* so I obviously ordered these. (*Side note: I had five hot beverages because... well... no other reason other than I love a hot drink!)
Lucky for me and my beverage addiction, they offer a 'Flight' which is a section of four mini lattes to try. I got (in order of preference): matcha latte, carrot cake latte, peanut butter latte and the beetroot latte. After this I got a full sized cacao latte with a shot of espresso. No pic of this as it was too good to be captured.
I got their Heirloom tomatoes, crispy kale, pesto, almond feta and vegan eggs on toast to start. I was VERY curious about the egg as I had never tried a plant-based egg before. The yolk was fabulously runny and it tasted so good - a slight sweet taste and the consistency was bang on.
I genuinely wish these eggs were served in every cafe as they'd be my new go-to brunch choice. The yolk is made of sweet potato, turmeric and linseed, with the white of the egg having that amazing egg-like wobble and shine due to the coconut and agar ingredients.
After this we got the gluten free matcha pancakes with dark chocolate sauce and macadamia ice-cream. The staff were so lovely and friendly too and even apologised about having a smaller menu due to a problem in the kitchen - honestly we didn't even notice as they still had an amazing selection. I was planning on getting a donut to take away but was so full after all the food that my eyes couldn't look at anything edible for a few hours. Put a fork in me, I am DONE.
I am not sure if any other cafe in Australia will quite live up to this but I will continue my search of eating my way around the vegetarian and vegan eateries to find out <3
